All 10 CONMEBOL nations play a single home-and-away round-robin (18 matches each); the top 6 qualify directly for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the 7th-placed team advances to the inter-confederation play-off, and the rest are eliminated.
Twelve groups (A-F with four teams, G-L with five teams) played home-and-away; each group winner qualified directly for the 2026 World Cup, and each group runner-up advanced to the March 2026 European play-offs.
Nine groups (A-I) of up to six teams played home-and-away; each group winner qualified directly for the 2026 World Cup, and the four best group runners-up advanced to a CAF play-off whose winner went on to the inter-confederation play-off (results against the sixth-placed team were discarded when ranking runners-up because Group E had only five teams after Eritrea withdrew).
In the third round, 18 teams were drawn into three groups of six; the top two in each group qualified directly for the 2026 World Cup (6 berths). The third- and fourth-placed teams advanced to the fourth round, where two groups of three were played; each group winner qualified directly (2 more berths) and the two runners-up advanced to the AFC fifth round / inter-confederation play-off.
CONCACAF had 3 direct slots and 2 inter-confederation play-off slots for the 2026 World Cup (in addition to co-hosts USA, Canada and Mexico, who qualified automatically and are not shown here). In the final round, 12 teams were split into three groups of four. Each group winner qualified directly for the World Cup, and the two best runners-up advanced to the inter-confederation play-offs.
The OFC third (final) round was a four-team knockout (two semi-finals plus a final). The winner qualified directly for the 2026 FIFA World Cup; the runner-up advanced to the inter-confederation play-offs. New Zealand beat Fiji 7-0 and New Caledonia 3-0 to qualify; New Caledonia beat Tahiti 3-0 then lost the final.
