The 2026 World Cup was the first with 48 teams, up from the 32 that contested every tournament from 1998 to 2022. It was also the first hosted by three countries — the United States, Canada and Mexico — and the first to reach 104 matches, across 16 host cities. The 2030 World Cup keeps the 48-team field, so this is the shape of the tournament for the foreseeable future. This guide explains how the format works and what happened the first time it was played.
12 groups of four
The 48 teams were drawn into 12 groups of four, labelled A to L. Each team played the other three in its group once, so every nation was guaranteed three matches — as in the old format. That alone made 72 group games, played from 11 to 27 June 2026.
Groups are ranked on points (three for a win, one for a draw), then goal difference, then goals scored. If teams are still level, FIFA's tie-break chain follows: head-to-head points, head-to-head goal difference, head-to-head goals scored, disciplinary (fair-play) points and, finally, a drawing of lots.
The Round of 32
Twelve groups cannot feed a tidy power-of-two bracket, so the format adds a knockout round at the front: a Round of 32. The top two in each group qualify automatically — 24 teams — and are joined by the eight best third-placed teams. From there it is single elimination all the way to the final.
Under the 2010–2022 format only the top two from eight groups advanced, and finishing third meant going home. Now two-thirds of the field survives the group stage, which makes every late goal in the final round of group games matter: the line between the eighth- and ninth-best third-placed team can come down to goal difference.
How the best third-placed teams are ranked
The twelve third-placed teams are compared with each other, not within their groups, using the same yardstick: points, then goal difference, then goals scored, then disciplinary record. The top eight advance; the other four are eliminated.
From the Round of 32 to the final
After the Round of 32 the bracket follows the familiar shape — Round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals, third-place play-off and final. A finalist plays eight matches: three in the group and five knockout ties, one more than the seven a 2022 finalist played. Knockout matches level after 90 minutes go to 30 minutes of extra time and then penalties, and teams may make a sixth substitution in extra time.
How it played out in 2026
The tournament opened on 11 June at Mexico City's Estadio Azteca, where Mexico beat South Africa 2–0, and ended on 19 July at MetLife Stadium with Spain beating Argentina 1–0 after extra time. In between, 104 matches produced 308 goals, almost three per game.
- The third-place cut-off: seven third-placed teams went through on four points. The last place went to Senegal on three points and a +2 goal difference, ahead of Iran (3 points, 0), South Korea (3, −1) and Scotland (3, −3). Uruguay finished third in Group H with two points and went out.
- Third place got teams into the bracket but rarely further: of the eight, only Paraguay won their Round of 32 tie, knocking out Germany on penalties after a 1–1 draw, before losing 1–0 to France.
- Four knockout ties were still level after extra time and went to penalties: Germany–Paraguay, Netherlands–Morocco, Australia–Egypt and Switzerland–Colombia.
- All three hosts reached the round of 16 and none went further. Mexico won Group A with nine points and lost 3–2 to England; the United States won Group D and lost 4–1 to Belgium; Canada, second in Group B, beat South Africa and then lost 3–0 to Morocco.
- The champions used the full eight matches. Spain opened with a 0–0 draw against Cape Verde, did not lose, and conceded one goal in the entire tournament — Charles De Ketelaere's, in the quarter-final against Belgium.
The lesson for 2030: the group stage is more forgiving than before, but the extra knockout round is not. A team can survive a bad group game; it still has to win five straight knockout ties to lift the trophy.
